The city of Jena sends a letter to all citizens over 60 years of age reminding them of the so-called booster vaccination, i.e. the booster of the vaccination protection for those over 60 years of age. Information is provided about why a booster vaccination is especially important for people in these age groups and how to get it.
Why is a booster vaccination important?
According to the Robert Koch Institute, COVID-19 vaccines effectively and persistently protect against severe illness and death from COVID-19. Vaccination also protects against SARS-CoV-2 infections, thereby also reducing the risk of transmission from vaccinated individuals to their contacts. However, it has been shown that vaccination protection declines over time, particularly with regard to the prevention of asymptomatic infections and mild courses of disease. In older age, the immune response after vaccination is generally lower and vaccine breakthroughs can more often also lead to a severe course of disease. For this reason, it is important that people who have been vaccinated about five to six months ago refresh their vaccination protection. Especially against the background of the utilisation of intensive care beds in the hospitals
