30th Jena Façade Prize awarded

Thanks to private sponsors, the city of Jena was able to award the Jena Façade Prize for the 30th time this year. Since 1993, 30 main prizes, 84 recognitions with cash prizes, 60 awards/recognitions without prize money and 16 special prizes for energy efficiency have been awarded on the basis of almost 550 applications.

Mayor Christian Gerlitz: "I am delighted that a total of €11,000 was available this year, which could be distributed among the main prize, the recognitions and the special prize for energy efficiency."

Only recognition without prize money is awarded to public contractors and larger players in the housing market.

By the beginning of October, 12 applications had been received. These cover a wide range of projects. From smaller and larger private residential buildings to public institutions and commercial buildings. The eleven-member jury, which consisted of representatives of the sponsors, the city administration and a member of the architectural advisory board, met on 10.11.2022. The award ceremony took place on Monday evening in the town hall.

The prizes:

  • The conversion and renovation project of the single-family house at Johann-Griesbach-Str. 6 (planning: Dipl.-Bauingenieur Jürgen Bieler, Jena) was awarded the special prize for energy efficiency (prize money €1,000) .

The building owners can be credited with a clear affinity for a technical solution. Despite the lack of calculations, the efforts made to achieve a high level of energy efficiency are comprehensible, commendable and go hand in hand with good integration into the building design. The complex control and regulation technology with individual programming for the property and the associated high degree of automation are particularly noteworthy. The impressively low annual energy consumption for the size of the household shows the effect of all the measures. As a result, the residential building demonstrates the above-average quality and quantity required by the tender conditions with regard to the combination of architecture with the use of renewable energies and technologies to increase energy efficiency.

  • Kommunale Immobilien Jena received recognition (without prize money) for the refurbishment and extension of the "Jenzigblick" kindergarten .

The conversion of the 1950s kindergarten was aimed at expanding the usable space by adding a storey to the roof and improving the conditions of use by changing the floor plan. The project is a positive example of a further development with a pleasing design based on the existing building. The conversion was carried out with high quality craftsmanship and achieves a modern external effect with the restrained color scheme and the selected materials. The open spaces appear well thought out and appropriate for the target group. As the jury was able to see for itself, the property has been very well received by the young users.

  • The three-sided courtyard Max-Gräfe-Gasse 22 (planning IBA GmbH, Jena) received a commendation (without prize money) for the extensive refurbishment and conversion work .

The courtyard complex was extensively renovated, converted into four residential units and the barn at the rear was converted for residential use while retaining the half-timbered motif. In the jury's view, this is a successful refurbishment with increased utility value for the residents. In particular, the street view with the renovated gateway has an exemplary character and enriches the streetscape of Max-Gräfe-Gasse. The materials in the outdoor facilities and the garden design also blend in well with the overall picture.

  • The new office and production building "Halle 10" at Max-Grossmann-Straße 1 (planning: Waldhelm GmbH and IBA GmbH, Jena) was awarded a prize (€1,000).

A high-quality commercial building has been created, which impresses with its filigree and varied façade design with a coherent structure and balanced accentuation in terms of depth and color scheme. The façade achieves a very elegant appearance thanks to the high-quality, outstanding craftsmanship of the details. The project is a successful example of a pleasant break-up of large, uniform façade surfaces and also fulfills design requirements for more exposed locations in the city. The outdoor facilities with appealing green elements and the embedding of the technical installations round off the overall picture in a pleasant way.

  • The conversion and refurbishment project for the detached house at Johann-Griesbach-Str. 6 (planning: Dipl.-Bauingenieur Jürgen Bieler, Jena) received an award (€1,000) in addition to the special energy prize.

The basic structure of the residential building from the 1930s was retained during the energy-efficient refurbishment despite new window divisions, but was extended by two dormers as part of the new roof construction, a new balcony and a carport.

Following the conversion of the residential building, together with the appropriate garden design, an attractive overall ensemble has been created that reinterprets the original building structure. The uniform façade is well structured with the new window arrangements and generous shutters. Together with the subtle color scheme and the materials of the garden design, a sophisticated overall impression is created.

  • This year, the 30th Jena Façade Award 2022, which includes prize money of €6,000, went to the Kauhaus family for the renovation and conversion of the semi-detached house at Friedrich-Engels-Straße 22 (design: Trzebowski Schiffel Architekten, Jena).

This refurbishment and conversion of an existing property dating back to 1915 fully meets the objectives of the competition. The building was extensively adapted and extended to meet the new requirements while respecting and preserving the existing structure. The overall ensemble of the semi-detached house was successfully restored with increased effort and attention to detail - e.g. revival of period elements such as window shutters, flower boxes and fencing. The lovingly designed details of the extension, such as the cornices, the façade scaffolding and the inconspicuously fitted door to the bicycle room in combination with the high-quality outdoor facilities, are also impressive.

The project is an exemplary demonstration of how it is possible to carefully develop an existing building while retaining design elements from the period of construction with modern additions, even when energy-efficient refurbishment is required.

"This year's award winner is characterized above all by the preservation and further development of the original appearance of the house. The noticeable commitment of the building owners in this process is an excellent example of how to upgrade and adapt historic buildings to modern requirements," says Mayor Christian Gerlitz.

The 2022 applications can be viewed until the end of the year in the Rathausdiele during the opening hours of the registry office and probably from January 9th for 2 weeks in the Goethegalerie
