Overview: City Council
The City Council is the elected body of the City of Jena.
It lays down the principles governing the administration of the city and decides on all matters concerning the city, insofar as these are not delegated to the decision-making committees, are not the responsibility of the Lord Mayor by virtue of the law, or are not delegated to him by the City Council.
The duties, composition and powers of the City Council are set out in the provisions of Section 22 of the Thuringian Local Government Act (ThürKO).
The City Council must be provided with the resources and facilities necessary to fulfil its duties; in particular, an office must be made available to it. In its day-to-day work, it reports directly to the City Council (Main Statutes of the City of Jena, Section 4).
