3,300 fiber optic connections for Jena in the districts of Drackendorf and Lobeda East
Deutsche Telekom is expanding a fiber optic network for 3,300 households in the districts of Drackendorf and Lobeda Ost in Jena. The new network will enable bandwidths of up to 1 gigabit per second (Gbit/s). It is so powerful that working and studying at home, video conferencing, surfing and streaming are all possible at the same time. Anyone who opts for a fiber optic connection with immediate effect will receive the home connection free of charge. This saves homeowners around €800.
Mayor and Head of Urban Development Christian Gerlitz emphasizes the importance of fast and stable internet connections:
"Across Germany, the expansion of fiber optic networks is picking up speed, as a fiber optic connection to the home or office offers exactly the bandwidths that will be needed in the future. Deutsche Telekom's early commitment in Jena underlines our claim to be a high-tech location in Thuringia."
The department head responsible for finance and digitalization, Benjamin Koppe, emphasizes:
"Following constructive discussions, we as a city are supporting Telekom in fulfilling its statutory coverage mandate. The planned expansion will make our city more attractive in the long term and contribute to further growth in population and economic power."
"The residents of Jena in the districts of Drackendorf and Lobeda Ost now have the chance to get a fiber optic connection free of charge. One very important point: it won't happen on its own. We need the consent of the property owners. Because we have to enter private property to lay the fiber optic connection," says Roman Gebhardt, Regional Manager at Deutsche Telekom.
The order is placed with Deutsche Telekom online via a dedicated website. A working e-mail address is required, as all appointments and arrangements are made via this. In the case of orders from tenants, Telekom then contacts the landlord. They will then discuss where the fiber optic cable will enter the house and how it will be routed. Further information on the start of the pre-registration phase will follow in the official gazette and in the daily press.
