936 first graders start school in Jena

A total of 936 boys and girls will start school in Jena on Monday. That is 87 fewer than in the 2024/25 school year, when there were a total of 1,023 school starters. In 2023/24, 1,016 girls and boys started school. In 2021/22, 909 girls and boys started school.

Age of school starters

The majority of current school starters are six years old. 16 children start school at the age of five, 113 at the age of seven and one child at the age of eight.

Number of classes

Most first classes are at the Nordschule, Westschule and Saaletalschule elementary school, with four classes each. The Werkstattschule and the Gemeinschaftsschule Galileo only have one first class. All other elementary school have two or three first classes.

Among the secondary schools, the Wenigenjena Community School, the Ernst-Abbe-Gymnasium and the Angergymnasium have the most fifth classes with four learning groups.
