Greenery on and around buildings contributes significantly to the beautification of our cityscape. In addition to the aesthetic aspect, greenery on buildings is of great importance for the urban climate and ecology. Rainwater is retained, stored and later released again, creating a balanced microclimate in summer. The leaf mass binds pollutants such as CO2, reduces noise and provides food and habitat for numerous animals such as birds and insects. Last but not least, the color green has a calming and relaxing effect on us humans - green is a piece of perceived quality of life.

The city of Jena invites all owners and designers of ecologically and aesthetically particularly successful green facades, roofs, balconies, front gardens, courtyards and fallow land to apply for the "Prize for Green Oases in Jena" by 31.08.2022. Both long-term and temporary green spaces are eligible for the award. The prize comprises a total amount of 2,000 euros and is usually divided among several prize winners.

How you can apply

The following information is required from applicants

  • Name and address, e-mail address or telephone number
  • Location and detailed description of the greening
  • Several meaningful photos

Applications are open to private individuals, companies, clubs, associations, planning offices and architects who own a greened property and/or have created a project and have been authorized by the owner to take part in the competition.

This year's award ceremony is scheduled for October.

In view of the occasion, we would like to point out that greenery on properties with an unresolved legal status is generally excluded from the award. This applies in particular to properties that require planning permission, for which no permission has been granted and which are not protected as existing buildings, but also to properties that are the subject of other ongoing proceedings under building regulations, such as prohibitions of use or demolition orders.
