Luminaires of the modern age. Jena lighting glass in the Bauhaus era

Curator's tour of the exhibition in the City Museum with Dr. Angelika Steinmetz-Oppelland and Armin Huber

  • Time: Thursday, 07.11.2019, 7 pm

Driven by the economic development of the Zeiss and Schott companies, Jena made the leap into the modern age around 1900. It was Schott's glass products for the household sector in particular that combined modern technical developments with contemporary design. There were repeated collaborations with Bauhaus artists in the 1920s. The production of lighting fixtures and glass lampshades during the first decades of the 20th century is a complex that has received little recognition to date. Starting with gas mantles - illuminants for modern gas lanterns - Schott found a new area of application for the heat-resistant Jena glass during the transition to electric lighting.

The camera manufacturer Zeiss-Ikon also produced luminaires. Inspired by the functional design language of the Bauhaus, the corresponding lampshades were widely used and sometimes became classics of luminaire design. The exhibition provides the first comprehensive look at this early chapter of modern lighting design.
