A broken water main in Fürstengraben needs to be repaired as soon as possible

A defect in a drinking water supply line was discovered today (September 30, 2026) in the area of Fürstengraben. To repair the damage, one side of Fürstengraben must therefore be closed immediately.

The closure affects the lane heading into the city in the section roughly between the Pulverturm and the entrance to the Botanical Garden, as well as the turning lane toward Heinrichsberg for traffic heading out of the city. It is not yet possible to reliably estimate how long the closure will last. First, the damaged pipe must be exposed and the scope of the necessary work assessed. The closure is expected to last until at least the middle of next week. A detour will be signposted. The lane heading out of town will remain open during construction.

The damage to the pipeline is not currently affecting the drinking water supply to customers. For the duration of the work on the water main, brief service interruptions are expected tomorrow, Thursday, October 1, 2026, in the western part of Fürstengraben, parts of Johannisplatz, and in Heinrichsberg.

Pressure fluctuations and temporary cloudiness in the drinking water are also possible. These are caused by iron and manganese particles stirred up in the pipes and pose no health risk. Customers are asked to wait it out in such cases and then simply let the water run for a while until it comes out of the tap clear again. It is also recommended that homeowners check and, if necessary, backflush their household water filters. 

The defect in the drinking water main became apparent because the Thuringian University and State Library (ThULB) detected moisture in its basement and reported it to JenaWasser. Subsequently, the damaged section was located in the area in front of the building at Fürstengraben 27. The water leaks are under control and have not caused any damage.
