Chief Fire Officer Peter Schörnig is promoted to Fire Director

Chief Fire Officer Peter Schörnig was promoted to Fire Director on 26.04.2023. The decision to promote him was made by the Lord Mayor of the City of Jena, Dr. Thomas Nitzsche, and follows a successful career for the civil servant in the Jena fire department.

As an experienced head of the control center, Peter Schörnig has already worked to expand the Jena regional control center and develop it into an East Thuringian network in order to increase the safety of Jena and the other local authorities. He more than deserved his promotion and, looking back on his career, the Jena professional fire department owes a great deal to his work. Together with other colleagues, he is a veteran of the Jena fire department. With regard to the remaining time until his retirement, the task now is to reorganize the professional fire department and develop a future-proof structure.

Peter Schörnig has been part of the fire department since 1991. From 1997 to 2017, he was team leader of the Jena control center and, since January 2012, deputy head of the fire department. When the former head of the specialist service left, he was appointed acting head of the specialist fire department in July 2017. From this point onwards, he was permanently assigned the duties of head of the fire department. Mr. Schörnig performs these duties in full and with great commitment. During his career, he has mastered numerous challenges and proven himself to be a highly qualified expert in the field of firefighting and emergency preparedness. His skills and experience have helped to improve the safety and well-being of the residents of the city of Jena.

Mayor Christian Gerlitz, who presented the certificate of appointment on his behalf, also had words of praise for him:

'Thanks to his many years of dedication and the promotion he has now received, Jena now has a fire director for the first time. A great success for Mr. Schörnig and at the same time an enrichment for the entire city. I would like to offer my warmest congratulations.

In his new position as Fire Director, Peter Schörnig will play a central role in shaping the future strategies of the Fire Department and help to achieve the organization's mission of ensuring the safety and well-being of the city's citizens.
