Children's passports have been abolished

18.01.2024

The children's passport was abolished at the beginning of the year. Documents that have already been issued remain valid until the date printed on them - but it is no longer possible to update or extend them. Children can either apply for a regular passport - as for adults - or an identity card. Anyone over the age of 16 must have either an identity card or a passport.

Note longer production time / citizen service closes for relocation

The new travel documents for children can no longer be taken away immediately, but have the same production time at the Bundesdruckerei as the adult documents. This is usually between four and six weeks. If you are in a hurry, passports can be ordered by express delivery. If the application is submitted by 11 a.m., the document will be ready within three working days (Monday to Friday).

Travelers should not only note the production times, but also the closing times of the citizen service. As the team will be moving into the new building on Engelplatz, the Citizens' Service will be closed from 18.03.2024 to 20.03.2024. Appointments can then be booked at the new location from March 21. Travelers who need travel documents for the Easter vacations starting on 25.03.2024 should therefore apply for them early.

The cost of a passport for under 24-year-olds is 37.50 euros (express order: 69.50 euros). From the age of 24, the fee is 70 euros (express 102 euros).

The background
