Children's playground opened on Burgweg

01.08.2024

Since August 1, 2024, the Hausbergviertel has had its first children's playground. This makes a long-cherished wish of the district a reality.

The first efforts to find a suitable area for a playground began back in 2021. In close consultation with the Wenigenjena district council and committed residents, a suitable area was finally identified.

Following the public tender in October 2023, the construction project was awarded to the company Garten- und Landschaftsbau Axel Jentsch from Bad Köstritz. The playground was redesigned in April and May of this year. The playground covers a total area of 180 m².

Special challenges arose during planning due to the root zone of an existing English oak and a height difference of 1.30 m on the surface. Despite these restrictions, a child-friendly and safe play environment was created by filling the fall protection area with natural wood chips and adapting it to the height conditions.

The playground offers a wide range of activities for children of kindergarten age, inviting them to climb, sit and play imaginatively. The play equipment includes a "caterpillar" with a marble run, two rocking animals and the dog petting stone, which acts as a friendly guardian of the playground. Benches with a table and trees to provide shade round off the playground. The total construction costs amount to €70,000.

Children from the "Löwenzahn" kindergarten inaugurated the playground with Mayor Christian Gerlitz, Guntram Wothly, Chairman of the Urban Development Committee, local mayor Bastian Stein and Uwe Feige, Works Manager of Kommunalservice Jena. Rosa Maria Haschke was delighted with the square as a wonderful conclusion to her time as mayor of the district.

Mayor Gerlitz emphasized that this playground also illustrates the efforts of holistic urban development. In addition to local residents, the rope course will also be enjoyed by visitors to the hiking trails to the Fuchsturm and Ziegenhain and offer a welcome change of pace.
