Citizen's income comes from January 2023

In 2023, the citizen's income will be introduced, replacing unemployment benefit II. The provisions of the new law will be implemented in two stages: on January 1, 2023 and July 1, 2023. The implementation is a comprehensive reform of the basic income support for jobseekers. With the further development of basic income support, it will be adapted to developments in the labor market and people's living conditions. The aim is to focus more strongly on long-term integration into work and improving labor market opportunities through qualifications and vocational training. For this reason, a 12-month waiting period is granted at the beginning of receipt of the citizen's allowance. Anyone currently receiving unemployment benefit II or social benefit will also receive citizen's allowance; no new application needs to be made for this.

What will apply from January 1, 2023?

The standard rates will increase by between €35 and €53, depending on the standard needs level of those entitled to benefits. In order to continue receiving their money, recipients of citizen's allowance do not have to take action or submit a new application. The increase is stored in the jenarbeit system so that the changed rates are paid out automatically. Furthermore, the appropriateness of the home is only checked after 12 months (waiting period). Until then, the actual costs of the apartment will be paid. This does not apply to heating costs, which are granted to a reasonable extent.

Which regulations will come into force on July 1, 2023?

The allowances for all employed persons will be improved. If you earn between €520 and €1,000, you will be allowed to keep 30 percent of it. This means up to 90 euros more in your wallet than before. Citizens' allowance recipients can take advantage of holistic support/coaching as a new offer. The coaching can also be provided to jobseekers, during training or during employment.
