CITY CYCLING: Cycled around the equator 7.6 times
From 21.08. to 10.09.2019, Jena took part in the Climate Alliance's CITY CYCLING campaign for the 8th time. With 305,852 kilometers cycled, 1,603 active cyclists and thus 43 tons of CO2 avoided compared to car journeys, Jena is this year at the top of the Thuringian participating municipalities in CITY CYCLING 2019.
"Of course we are proud to have overtaken the state capital. However, Arnstadt and Ilmenau cycled 3.56 km per inhabitant, which is more than Jena with 2.76 km/inhabitant - so there is still room for improvement," said Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche.
Jena is currently in 70th place nationwide. To date, 1,127 municipalities and 401,233 cyclists have taken part in the campaign, covering a total of over 76 million kilometers.
Team "Paradies" in the lead
The most successful teams in Jena include the "Paradies" team with over 1,000 km/head, the "Cul de la Course" team with approx. 900 km/head and the "Team 60+" (!) also covered over 700 km per head.
In terms of the number of cyclists per team, the grammar schools came out on top: Angergymnasium crossed the imaginary finish line as the winner with 153 active cyclists, closely followed by Carl-Zeiss-Gymnasium (123 cyclists) and the team from Jena University Hospital (103 cyclists).
CITY CYCLING a complete success
Ulrike Zimmermann, cycling officer and coordinator of CITY CYCLING in Jena, described CITY CYCLING as a complete success. "In addition to climate protection, the fun of cycling and health promotion, this year's CITY CYCLING in Jena was the first time a fundraising campaign for the integrative daycare centers in the city was associated with the CITY CYCLING," she says.
These ten daycare centers run by various organizations provide inclusive care for children with disabilities. It is important for the children's sense of community that all children have the opportunity to take part in outdoor play and exercise.

For this purpose, there are pedal vehicles - quasi "children's tricycles-rickshaws", which allow children who cannot ride themselves to be taken along thanks to the "passenger seats". They can also be strapped in if necessary. The vehicles are, of course, purely muscle-powered.
Donations still possible
Over 1,500 euros have already been donated for the purchase of these vehicles as part of the CITY CYCLING campaign. However, donations are still possible and it would be great if four vehicles could be purchased for around 500 euros each through the campaign and handed over to four integrative daycare centers drawn by lot.
