City of Jena appeals for donations of furniture for shared accommodation

28.03.2022

Please note that the collection campaign is over.

The accommodation on Yuri Gagarin Street has been prepared for refugees from Ukraine for the past two weeks. On Wednesday, the building will be handed over. However, there are currently severe delivery delays for ordered furniture. For this reason, the city of Jena, together with Kommunalservice Jena, is calling for donations of furniture.

Mayor Christian Gerlitz commented: "Thanks to the helpfulness of the people of Jena, hardly any people have had to use the emergency shelters so far, as hundreds of refugees have been accommodated in private apartments in Jena. Nevertheless, we need new places in shared accommodation as quickly as possible and have created infrastructures and prepared properties for this at an early stage. However, due to the generally tense delivery situation, the occupancy date is now in danger of being delayed by weeks because of the furniture. Therefore, with the support of the people of Jena, we hope to be able to initially equip the available rooms with furniture donations. I would like to express my sincere thanks to the team of Kommunalservice Jena, which will support the central donation logistics for furniture."

Kommunalservice Jena expands acceptance of donations to include furniture

Kommunalservice Jena, which has already accepted numerous consumer goods as donations at the KSJ recycling center, is now extending its acceptance of donations to include furniture.

Needed are concretely:

  • 70 usable beds/bedsteads in good condition
  • 80 usable closets, max. 1m wide, with one or two doors
  • 45 tables, ideally with the dimensions 120x80cm
  • 140 chairs, without upholstery

Possibilities of furniture delivery from Wednesday, 30.03.2022

Via the call number 03641 4989-511 of the KSJ, the furniture donations should be registered in advance. In this way, demand and offers can be coordinated in the background and it can be avoided that too many furniture donations are delivered that are not needed.

Optimal are pieces of furniture that can be transported assembled and delivered directly to the former nursing home in Juri-Gagarin-Straße 32, 07743. On Wednesday, March 30, 2022 through Saturday, April 2, a KSJ staff member will be on site from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. to accept usable furniture. Pieces of furniture that need to be disassembled for transport can also be registered via the hotline, although direct reassembly by donors directly in the community facility will also be gladly accepted.

Alternatively, furniture can also be dropped off at the KSJ recycling center, Löbstedter Straße 56, 07743 Jena, starting Wednesday, March 30, 2022, always Monday through Friday during regular opening hours.

If there is no possibility to get the furniture dismantled and transported, a team of the KSJ will also pick up the furniture on request. For this, too, advance notification via the central bulky waste telephone number is absolutely necessary in order to arrange appointments.
