City of Jena plans expansion on Schlegelsberg
The city of Jena is planning extensive construction work in the Schlegelsberg area together with Stadtwerke Jena Netze and Zweckverband JenaWasser. The plans include the barrier-free expansion of the Schlegelsberg stop as well as the fundamental renewal of Netzstraße and Berthold-Delbrück-Straße. The corresponding projects were discussed and voted on in yesterday's (28.05.2026) Urban Development and Environment Committee. Construction work is set to begin in spring 2027 with the bus turning facility and Berthold-Delbrück-Straße.
"These measures will sustainably improve the infrastructure in the Schlegelsberg residential area. In addition to better accessibility and increased road safety, important lines will also be renewed and the roads adapted to meet today's requirements," explains Dirk Lange, Head of Urban Development and Environment.
Barrier-free bus stop and new bus turning point
The Schlegelsberg stop on bus route 14 is to be made barrier-free. In future, buses will be able to drive closer to the kerb, making it easier for people with limited mobility in particular to get on and off the bus.
The measure will be implemented together with necessary line work by Stadtwerke Jena Netze. The expansion of the stop and the turning area is planned from spring 2027.
The total costs for this construction phase are around 750,000 euros. Funding for the project has been applied for via the "Municipal Transport Infrastructure" program of the Free State of Thuringia. The city's own contribution is expected to be around 300,000 euros.
Renewal of Netzstraße and Berthold-Delbrück-Straße
Netzstraße and Berthold-Delbrück-Straße are also to be completely resurfaced. Both roads date back to the 1930s in their current form and are now showing significant damage. As part of the construction work, Stadtwerke Jena Netze and JenaWasser are renewing their pipes. The roads will then be rebuilt. The street lighting will also be renewed.
A so-called mixed traffic area without traditional raised kerbs is planned. All road users - cars, bicycles and pedestrians - will use the road space together and with mutual consideration. The design is based on existing streets in the residential area (Franz-Gresitza-Straße, Carl-v.-Brüger-Straße), with which good experiences have been made.
New tree locations in the public street space were examined. However, due to the limited space, the hillside location and the existing greenery on private properties, this was decided against.
The expansion of Berthold-Delbrück-Straße will take place together with the Schlegelsberg stop from spring 2027. For Netzstraße, implementation is currently planned from 2029/2030.
Coordination in committees
The plans have already been coordinated with the Wenigenjena district council, the Mobility Advisory Board and the "Barrier-free Jena, Housing and Road Safety" working group.
