City of Jena warns: consistent intervention in the event of unannounced gatherings

04.12.2021

Through various calls on the Internet, the assembly authority of the city of Jena and the police have become aware of another planned meeting of critics against the current Corona measures, which is to take place on Sunday, December 5, 2021 at 6:00 p.m. on the market square of the city of Jena. This meeting fulfills the requirements for assemblies within the meaning of Art. 8 of the Basic Law. No notification of an assembly has yet been submitted to the assembly authority. At a similar assembly on 01.12.2021 on the Holzmarkt in Jena, there were repeated violations of the obligation to wear qualified face masks and to maintain a minimum distance of 1.5 meters, even after several speeches to the approximately 250 participants.

Head of Public Order Benjamin Koppe makes it clear: "Demonstrations with more than 35 people are prohibited under the current Corona State Ordinance and can only be approved in exceptional cases. Furthermore, the Assembly Act already stipulates a mandatory 48-hour notification period for the assembly authorities. In view of the current situation, a pandemic that has gotten out of control, an anonymous call for an assembly is simply irresponsible. This Saturday, the Jena health department recorded 175 new infections in just one day, with 150 cases not yet processed. You don't have to be a prophet to foresee a collapse of the hospitals in Thuringia if we don't manage to get the situation under control."

Violations of assembly law obligations and of the provisions of the currently applicable Thuringian SARS-CoV-2-IfS-MaßnVO may be subject to penalties and fines. The City of Jena would like to point out that assemblies can be banned and dissolved before they begin if there is an immediate threat to public safety and order. The assembly authorities and police will consistently implement these regulations next Sunday.
