Current dates for maypole setting and may bonfire
Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche, Mayor Christian Gerlitz and Head of Department Eberhard Hertzsch will be attending various maypole-setting and may bonfire events this coming weekend.
A tradition from the Middle Ages
The setting of the maypole is an old tradition that has its origins in the Middle Ages. The maypole used to be a symbol of fertility and vitality. The setting up of the tree was therefore often associated with dancing. Over time, the setting of the maypole has become an integral part of spring and May Day celebrations in many regions of Germany and is also a fixed part of the mayor's schedule.
Interested citizens are cordially invited to attend the maypole-setting and may bonfire celebrations.
