Directive on the reduction of light pollution adopted

13.07.2020

The city of Jena is committed to preventing and reducing light pollution and has therefore adopted a guideline for reducing light pollution.

The guideline contains a list of binding recommendations for the city administration and its own companies, private individuals, building owners and businesses. It regulates the use of light in public spaces and on commercial and private properties. An environmentally friendly use of artificial light can be achieved through the choice of light color, correct light control and the regulation of light intensity. The main aim is to avoid harmful effects on animals, especially insects, and to protect the night.

The directive applies to the construction and modification of lighting installations. However, special lighting installations for cultural highlights such as the Long Night of the Sciences remain possible. Similarly, safety in public spaces remains guaranteed through adequate lighting of streets, paths and squares.
