Discover fascinating moths in Jena on Friday

12.08.2025

Everyone knows butterflies - or thinks they do. In fact, of the approximately 3,700 species living in Germany, only around 200 are colorful diurnal butterflies. The vast majority are active at night and are therefore hidden from most people's view. But with special light sources and sophisticated bait formulas, these mysterious nocturnal creatures - with illustrious names such as hawkmoths, owls or bears - can be lured out of the darkness.

The Jena Lower Nature Conservation Authority, the Jena City Forestry Office (KSJ) and the "Mittlere Saale" Natura 2000 station cordially invite you to experience this nocturnal activity up close. After a short introductory talk, you will join entomologist Dr. Frank Hünefeld on a tour of various light traps and bait sites. There you will have the opportunity to observe moths and other fascinating insects at close range - an experience for all nature lovers.
