E-scooter rental from Wednesday

11.05.2021

A quick trip from the JenTower to paradise - from Wednesday, this will also be possible with an e-scooter in Jena. The first 80 units will be available for hire in the city. To ensure that this takes place in an orderly manner and with consideration for other road users, the city of Jena has concluded an agreement with the company offering the scooters. Other providers are interested - which is why a maximum limit has been set. A maximum of 400 e-scooters are to be used in Jena.

Mutual consideration between road users is a prerequisite

This form of so-called micromobility is not uncontroversial among experts. The city of Jena relies on regulation and progressive cooperation with the providers. Mutual consideration between road users, whether on foot or on wheels, must be the top priority. It is also clearly regulated by law and in the terms of use: The pedestrian zone and the sidewalk remain off-limits and may not be ridden on. Wearing a helmet when riding an e-scooter is recommended.

E-scooters as a building block for sustainable transport and mobility development in Jena

In addition to other measures, such as improving public transport services and expanding the infrastructure for cycling, the city of Jena also considers micro and local mobility services to be an essential component of sustainable transport and mobility development. Small electric vehicles such as e-scooters are suitable as a fast means of transportation over short distances for everyday journeys or leisure activities.

Locations and costs

The first e-scooters will be found on these streets, among others. The available e-scooters and their locations can be viewed via an app from the company TIER E-Scooter Sharing. The app can be downloaded from the Google AppStore (Android) and iTunes AppStore (iPhone). In principle, the scooters can be parked anywhere in the city - except in the prohibited zones on the banks of the Saale.
