Ernst-Abbe-Platz: Online Public Participation in the Redesign Begins

Following the second public participation workshop on the climate-friendly redesign of Ernst-Abbe-Platz, the project is moving into its next phase: Starting now, citizens can get involved online.

The results of the workshop and the winning design are available on the project page of the City of Jena’s public participation portal (link in the right-hand column). Interested individuals can comment on the design, vote on the ideas gathered during the workshop, and share their opinions on specific topics—such as the design of the bicycle parking facilities. Important note: Registration at mitmachen.jena.de is required to participate.

An Important Project with Many Challenges

The redesign of Ernst-Abbe-Platz is a key component of climate adaptation in Jena. At the same time, due to the diverse requirements for pedestrian and bicycle traffic, quality of stay, green spaces, and the various uses of the area, the project poses significant planning challenges that must be reconciled with the structural constraints, such as the underground parking garages and emergency escape routes. Feedback from the public will be incorporated into the further development of the design plans and will help to balance the various interests as effectively as possible.

Public Participation Until August 18, 2026

The online public participation period runs through August 18, 2026. Afterward, all comments received and poll results will be evaluated and forwarded to the planning team.

The structural redesign of Ernst-Abbe-Platz is scheduled to take place in phases starting in 2028, with operations continuing as usual.

The City of Jena cordially invites all interested parties to participate in the online consultation and to actively help shape the future of Ernst-Abbe-Platz.
