Everyday mobility in Jena examined
How do people move around Jena in everyday life? This was investigated by the Technical University of Dresden as part of the "System-representative traffic survey (SrV) 2023". To this end, randomly selected citizens were surveyed by telephone or online questionnaire for one year. The City of Jena and TU Dresden would like to thank all participants for their contribution to this important study.
First results
The first results of the study for Jena are now available:
- Jena is very likely to remain the nationwide leader in terms of the proportion of total traffic accounted for by walking. This will rise from 35.3% (2018) to 40.5% (2023), the highest figure since 1994.
- The share of motor vehicle traffic will fall from 34.3% (2018) to 26.7% (2023) - the lowest figure recorded in Jena since 1991. The Climate Action Plan's target of reducing this figure to 20% by 2035 therefore appears to be within reach.
- The share of cycling shows a slight upward trend, but does not match the growth of walking.
- The share of local public transport has remained virtually unchanged for several survey periods.
The full results are expected to be officially presented by TU Dresden at the end of March. The city comparison will then also be available, from which general trends can be derived. The most important findings will then be presented to the newly established Mobility Advisory Board.
Nationwide survey with over 270,000 participants
The survey, which is part of a Germany-wide mobility study, was aimed at all sections of the population and was carried out using a representative sample from the population register. Under the title "Mobility in Cities - SrV", a total of more than 270,000 people were surveyed across Germany to gain insights into how citizens make their everyday journeys and which means of transport they use. Around 1100 people were interviewed in Jena. The anonymized evaluation of the survey not only provides city-specific findings, but also city-wide trends that can be taken into account in transport planning.
Background
Since 1972, the project has provided important basic data for local and regional transport planning every five years. The city of Jena has been a SrV partner city since 1977 and took part in the mobility survey for the 11th time. In total, the survey was carried out in 493 cities/municipalities of various sizes throughout Germany.
