Fair trade on campus

04.11.2022

The online information event "Fairer Handel auf dem Campus. Fairtrade Universities in Thuringia" campaign presents the main features of the campaign and networks local sustainability initiatives at Thuringian universities. It will take place on Tuesday, 08.11.2022 from 14:00 to 15:30. All interested parties are cordially invited to attend. Registration is possible here. Markus Rebitschek, Education Officer "International Youth Work" at the "European Youth Education and Youth Meeting Center Weimar" Foundation, will moderate the joint event organized by Eine Welt Netzwerk Thüringen, Fairtrade Deutschland e.V., Studierendenwerk Thüringen and the City of Jena.

Background

Universities are social actors and important drivers of social, ecological, cultural and economic development. There are currently over 50,000 students studying at ten state and three private universities in Thuringia. Around 20,000 people are employed at the universities and at Jena University Hospital. Together with economic partners such as the Studierendenwerk Thüringen, they form a major market power and can be a decisive driver for sustainable development.

As part of the Fairtrade Universities campaign, the non-profit association Fairtrade Deutschland recognizes universities throughout Germany for their commitment to social sustainability. Around 40 universities are already involved and are implementing fair trade and its various aspects in everyday university life. Soon in Thuringia too?
