Fiber optic expansion in Jena

12.06.2025

The fiber optic expansion in Jena is progressing rapidly. Around 14,000 households and business locations are already connected to the fast fiber optic network. This is an important step on the way to a digital future. The city of Jena provides information on the current status, planned expansion areas and frequently asked questions from citizens.

Current status and further expansion areas

The majority of the expansion measures to date have focused on districts east of the Saale. These should be completed by the end of 2025. Since spring 2025, Deutsche Telekom, the largest network operator in Jena, has also been active in the northern part of the city - from Himmelreich to the Damenviertel and Isserstedt. The expansion of the city center will follow.

In the coming years, fiber optic connections will also be implemented in Jena-Süd (including Lichtenhain, Ammerbach, Ringwiese), Winzerla, Burgau, Göschwitz, Maua and Lobeda-West. In total, around 52,200 households and business locations in Jena are to be given access to fiber optics by 2028.

In addition to Deutsche Telekom, OXG Glasfaser GmbH (a Vodafone subsidiary) and Thüringer Netkom GmbH are also active. While OXG will begin expanding in selected residential areas from the second half of 2025, Thüringer Netkom will be active in peripheral areas as part of a subsidized project.

Important: the city is not building itself

The city administration and Kommunalservice Jena (KSJ) repeatedly receive queries in connection with ongoing construction work. A common misconception is that fiber optic expansion is not carried out on behalf of the city of Jena, but under the responsibility of the telecommunications companies themselves. The city merely issues permits (e.g. for civil engineering work) and attempts to exert a coordinated influence on the companies carrying out the work within the scope of its legal responsibilities. Due to the large number of construction projects and the different players mentioned above, this is not possible at every location in the city.
