Fire Department Response in East Jena

On Friday, September 4, 2026, at 11:47 a.m., the Jena Professional Fire Department was called to an incident at the Ostschule (Angergymnasium) in Jena Ost after a gas odor was detected on several floors of the old building. Emergency responders inspected the building. No cause for the gas odor could be determined. All students and teachers were evacuated and are now safe in the schoolyard. Traffic restrictions are currently in place on Karl Liebknecht Straße in both directions. Drivers are advised to take an alternate route.

As a precaution, the incident was classified as a “mass casualty incident.” Consequently, the fire department is on site with a large contingent of emergency responders and ambulances. The Christoph 70 rescue helicopter was also requested as a precaution. Several children are currently being treated in ambulances.
