06.04.2021

The six-month basic course for the intermediate fire department began today at the south station of the Jena professional fire department. This course is the first part of the two-year training for the career path to fire chief or fire inspector. Six participants are trainees from the city of Jena. Ten participants come from other departments, including two plant firefighters from Zwickau and Leuna as well as three candidates from Berlin in addition to candidates from Thuringia.

The candidates now face around 1,000 hours of theoretical and practical training. This includes basics such as mathematics, law and equipment knowledge as well as firefighting, vehicle knowledge, technical assistance and a training camp. In the sports and swimming lessons, but also in the practical training, the comrades have to push themselves to their limits. In his welcoming address, Head of Specialist Services Peter Schörnig therefore spoke of one of the most difficult, but also one of the most beautiful professions one can take up.

"Fire service work is always teamwork," Schörnig continued. "That's why a lot of emphasis is placed on team spirit and mutual help and support during training."

The responsible department head Benjamin Koppe is very satisfied with the development of the Jena training location "Word is spreading quickly about the excellent conditions in Jena. The training grounds on the TEAG site in particular offer unique training conditions. Added to this are the experienced instructors from the Jena professional fire department," says Koppe.

"In addition, the training alliance between the cities of Jena, Gera and Erfurt has proven its worth. "Curricula and learning content can be better coordinated, continuously improved and standardized through inter-municipal cooperation," says the department head.
