Firefighters from Lugoj as guests

17.05.2024

Since Tuesday, four firefighters from Jena's Romanian twin city Lugoj have been visiting for a professional exchange. In addition to a tour of the Jena fire station, the program included visits to the Thuringian State Fire Brigade School in Bad Köstritz, the Wöllnitz volunteer fire department and the fire department at the Total refinery in Leuna. Today, Friday, the guests met with Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche at the city's emergency response center.

Last summer, representatives from both cities celebrated the 40th anniversary of the partnership between Jena and Lugoj. Since the first agreement was signed in 1983, the two cities have kept the connection alive through intensive exchanges. The professional exchange between the fire departments also has a long tradition. Roland Döpel from the Jena professional fire department has maintained contact with Lugoj for around 23 years. As he will soon be retiring, his colleagues Nils Blamberg and André Volkmann were involved in the organization of this visit and will take over this task in the future.

Since 2014, numerous projects have been implemented in collaboration with the fire department from Lugoj and the surrounding area. For example, two fire engines, a turntable ladder vehicle and necessary spare parts from the Jena fire department were transferred to Lugoj and the surrounding area. General Lucian-Vasile Mihoc was very grateful for the technical and material support provided so far - but also for the insights into the work organization of the Jena fire department. He was also impressed by the structure of the volunteer fire departments in Jena, which he would like to use as a model to strengthen the volunteer brigades in his home country. He was accompanied by the head of the Lugoj fire department, Daniel Milut, watch commander Mirel-Vasile Coman and Cosmin Bujor.
