First green arrows for bicycles in Jena
On Friday, the first green arrows for cyclists were installed at various intersections in Jena. In future, citizens traveling by bike will be able to turn right more quickly at the traffic lights at Engelplatz, Otto-Schott-Straße/Westbahnhofstraße and Katharinenstraße/Lutherstraße, among others. The green arrow for cyclists works in the same way as for motor vehicles - a short stop at the junction is mandatory and turning is only permitted if it does not endanger or obstruct other road users. This enables a faster flow of traffic for cyclists.
Mayor Christian Gerlitz commented: "We will continuously improve the conditions for cycling in Jena. I am very pleased that the traffic authority and Kommunalservice Jena have identified various traffic lights as a first step where we can speed up cycling with the new green arrow option for cyclists."
The installation was made possible by the amendment to the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO) in 2020. Initial experience with the green arrow for cyclists had already been gained through traffic trials in Leipzig.
