First Jena Butterfly Night
When you think of butterflies, the image of butterflies fluttering in the sunshine almost always comes to mind. Names like peacock butterfly, swallowtail or cabbage white are probably familiar to everyone. But have you heard of the privet hawk moth? With a wingspan of almost 12 centimetres, it is one of our largest butterflies - and almost exclusively nocturnal!
Of the 3,700 butterfly species native to Germany, only around 200 are active during the day. The rest lead a rather "shadowy existence" in two respects. On 7 June 2019 , you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in the fascinating and incredibly diverse world of moths together with experts - right in the middle of the city.
As part of the "Long Day of Nature" (NABU), the nature conservation team of the Jena city administration and the city forest invite you to the "First Jena Moth Night" on the grounds of the city forest administration in Paradies, Vor dem Neutor 7.
Starting at 9 p.m., you will learn interesting facts about moths and their research in an illustrated lecture, after which you will be able to get your own impression of the colorful world of the fluttering creatures at special outdoor light traps. Let's see - maybe the privet hawkmoth will be there? In any case, it has already been found in our city.
