Foodsharing café: City of Jena continues to support format
The city of Jena is supporting the fairwertbar e.V. initiative for the second time. At its last meeting, the Urban Development and Environment Committee decided to support the Jena food sharing group and its food sharing café format with 3,600 euros. The city is thus recognizing the concrete commitment and the project, which makes an important contribution to the implementation of central municipal goals in the areas of sustainability, climate protection, education and social participation and at the same time strengthens civic engagement in Jena.
"The Jena foodsharing group and the foodsharing café format combine very practical climate protection with social commitment. Here, food is saved, knowledge is imparted and meeting spaces are created. Such projects show how sustainability and cohesion are put into practice in our city," emphasizes Lars Liebe, Head of Urban Development at the City of Jena.
The association, which emerged from the foodsharing Jena initiative and the repair café, has been actively involved in combating food and resource waste for many years. In addition to regular food rescue campaigns, it organizes public food distributions as well as educational and information events on sustainable consumption and resource conservation.
The approved funding will be used to consolidate and expand established structures. Regular lectures, film series and workshops are planned to raise public awareness of sustainable action and climate-friendly nutrition. The weekly food distributions will be continued. The recruitment and long-term involvement of new volunteers is also a key objective.
The food sharing café format will be continued at the meeting point on Fichteplatz in Jena-Süd - an established place for neighbourly encounters. The close cooperation with existing initiatives in the district creates synergies and enables the effective use of existing resources. The open and free services promote participation regardless of income or origin and strengthen social cohesion.
