Foundation of the Jena Climate Protection Agency

With the resolution of 24.01.2024 to establish the Jena Climate Protection Agency, the city council laid another important foundation stone towards climate neutrality in 2035 this week. The task of the first municipal climate protection agency in eastern Germany will include providing advice, information and support, as well as implementing specific climate protection measures. For example, a comprehensive building renovation campaign is to be developed and implemented.

Christian Gerlitz, Mayor and Head of Department, explains:

"With the establishment of the climate protection agency, we primarily want to expand the advisory services in the field of energy. Citizens, but also companies, want more information and independent personal advice, for example on replacing heating systems. The climate protection agency will bundle many municipal climate protection measures and implement them efficiently."

As a non-profit limited company, the climate protection agency will pursue exclusively non-profit purposes, namely municipal climate protection. In the course of the year, a management team will take over and a location for the headquarters will be sought. Climate protection is a task for society as a whole and the climate protection agency aims to involve a broad section of the population. A support association is to be founded this year, which anyone and everyone can join. From 2025, normal business operations are then to be launched with many offers for the citizens and companies of Jena.

The goal of climate neutrality by 2035 and the associated climate action plan were already adopted by the city council in April 2023. With the founding of the Jena Climate Protection Agency, a strategically important measure from the Climate Action Plan has now been implemented.
