Foundation laid for sustainable mobility in the city and the region
All the signatures are in place. With immediate effect, Jena's local transport and JES Verkehrsgesellschaft are officially under the umbrella of Stadtwerke Jena in a parent-subsidiary relationship.
parent-subsidiary relationship. This has further intensified the inter-municipal cooperation in Jena and the Saale-Holzland district and taken it to a new level. The new Supervisory Board of Jena's local transport system is expected to meet for the first time at the beginning of May with its completely new composition.
Prior to this, the new alliance was sealed today (4 April 2022) in a joint press event at by Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche, District Administrator Andreas Heller, Managing Director of Stadtwerke Claudia Budich and Managing Director of Jenaer Nahverkehr and JES Verkehrsgesellschaft Andreas Möller. The future cooperation between the two transport companies will focus on offering mobility as a core component of services of general interest in a joint Jena-Saale-Holzland transport area. Local public transport plays a central role both in terms of achieving climate policy goals and the concrete quality of life of people in the city and district.
Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche commented: "The connection between JES and JNV is a major and important milestone in the cooperation between Jena and the Saale-Holzland district. The fact that JES will become a wholly-owned subsidiary of JNV will allow us to coordinate our local transport plans and create an even more advantageous link between urban and regional transport. This connection between the two local transport companies is a strong signal. It demonstrates how we think and act together as a region that has economic growth and investment as well as climate protection firmly in mind."
"We all know: Urban and rural public transport are actually two different things. In the city, a high frequency of journeys is possible in a comparatively small space. In the countryside, the aim is to serve many small and larger towns in the area," explains District Administrator Andreas Heller. "Combining this was the challenge of this collaboration. I am pleased that we have succeeded in doing so and I am convinced that our joint local transport service now has two sound, solid foundations. Now it's a matter of turning the connection between our two companies into a win-win situation for all sides and, above all, for the people who use the buses and trains."
