Ground markings on cycle paths
With a charming offensive, the city of Jena wants to resolve a dispute between cyclists and farmers in particular. Under the motto "Consideration is appreciated", paths were marked with friendly markings that are used by agricultural traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians.
Seven of these markings were applied just in time for the start of the summer season. More can follow as required.
Ms. Ulrike Zimmermann, the City of Jena's Cycling Officer, and Mr. Lars Liebe, Head of Urban Development, ask all users of such multi-use paths to show consideration for each other. This applies to all road users: pedestrians, cyclists and agricultural traffic.
I think it should be a matter of course to pull over or stop when a tractor or horse and cart wants to pass. A friendly tone of voice and a "please and thank you" also works well between joggers, dog walkers and skaters,
says the cycling traffic officer.
Lars Liebe notes that he recently had a conversation with a regional farmer in which he reported on his everyday experiences: "The farmer, who also has to drive his car to the fields to check their condition, is unfortunately often downright insulted by cyclists. It must therefore be emphasized that agricultural traffic does not only consist of tractor or combine harvester rides.
However, the colorful ground markings with a diameter of 1.70 m were applied in order to point out mutual consideration in a way that is not just restrictive or with a raised index finger. The markings show a tractor driver, a cyclist and pedestrians. In the middle is the inscription "Consideration matters."
