Heat warnings for the Jena area

14.08.2023

The German Weather Service has issued an official heat warning for the Jena area for Tuesday. Severe heat is also forecast for the coming days of the week and further heat warnings are possible. Wednesday and Thursday will bring precipitation, which will result in sultry heat and make the high temperatures seem particularly oppressive. Due to the intense sunshine, the UV index may rise to "high", especially towards the end of the week.

Due to this weather development, the Jena Health Department advises children and older people in particular to adjust their daily rhythm:

  • drink enough
  • Avoid heavy meals
  • sun protection:
seek shade at midday, wear long clothing, a hat and sunglasses
  • Apply sunscreen several times a day
  • Avoid excessive physical exertion
  • postpone necessary errands until early in the morning or late in the evening.
  • Moisturize your body with water (arm or foot baths, cool damp compresses, lukewarm showers, water sprays)
  • Babies and small children should sleep in the coolest room in the house
  • Ventilate the home if it is colder outside than inside

Children up to the age of 14 can visit Jena's two outdoor swimming pools free of charge until Friday, August 19. Free sun cream is offered there.

With these tips, we wish everyone a pleasant summer week.
