Information procedure for corona infections in Jena schools

15.10.2020

Due to time constraints, the question was not answered by City Council Chairman Jens Thomas during question time at the City Council meeting on Wednesday, October 14, 2020. As the question is of particular public interest, we are publishing the answer on infection incidents in schools here:

In the event of new corona infections, how quickly and to what extent are classmates and teachers (contact persons) informed and tested, by whom, and within what period of time are they informed of the test result by whom, how long do the first-degree contact persons have to be quarantined?

  • As soon as a COVID-19 case becomes known, the necessary investigations are carried out immediately by the employees of the health department in close cooperation with the respective school management.
  • The identified contact persons are categorized according to the RKI specifications. The first-degree contacts are then contacted and an individual interview takes place.
  • First-degree contacts must currently be quarantined for 14 days after the last contact with the original case. Should this guideline change, this will be communicated by the Health Service. There is an information letter for the parents concerned. A sample can be found in the appendix.
  • Asymptomatic contact persons (persons without COVID-19 symptoms) are tested between the 6th and 7th day after the last contact with the COVID-19 case. However, a negative test result does not shorten the quarantine period.
  • The extent of testing depends on the COVID-19 case and its contacts in the infectious period (starting 48 hours before the first symptoms). This is always an individual decision, i.e. there is no one-size-fits-all approach.
  • If contact persons develop COVID-19 symptoms during quarantine, they must present to their GP and will be tested there. This is where the treatment mandate of general practitioners and the costs borne by private and statutory health insurance companies come into play.
  • The availability of the test result depends, among other things, on the laboratories that carry out the test.
  • If contact persons are tested at the swab/fever consultation of the specialist health service, they will receive the test result after 48 hours at the latest, which will be communicated to them by telephone by the staff of the specialist service.
