Jena and Erlangen celebrate October 3 together

The twin cities of Jena and Erlangen will celebrate the Day of German Unity on October 3, 2024 with a joint ceremony in Jena. For many years, citizens of both cities have visited each other on this day every year. Around 200 guests are expected from the Franconian twin city this year.

Ceremony in the Volkshaus

The program starts at 11 a.m. in the Volkshaus with the official ceremony, to which all interested parties are cordially invited. Jena's Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche and Jörg Volleth, the second mayor of Erlangen, will be present. The welcoming address will be followed by a speech by Linda Teuteberg, Member of the German Bundestag and Deputy Chairwoman of Gegen Vergessen e.V. and Deutsche Gesellschaft e.V.. The event will be accompanied by musical and dance performances by the flute ensemble of the Erlangen Singing and Music School and the Jena street dance formation "Cucumbers".

Varied program

In addition to city tours on the topics of "35 Years of the Fall of the Berlin Wall and the Peaceful Revolution" and "Women of Romanticism", the program also includes the opening of the art exhibition "Encounter" by the Plus Group from the Erlangen Art Association in the historic town hall. This will be accompanied by a flute concert performed by the Erlangen and Jena music schools.

Other items on the program include a pub quiz in Café Immergrün and the screening of the third part of the film on the town twinning with an introduction by the History Workshop and a discussion with the protagonists.

Prayer and singing together

After an ecumenical prayer service in St. Michael's Church, the program will end with a communal singing session as part of the "Deutschland singt und klingt" initiative.

Concert the evening before

On the eve of the Day of German Unity, on October 2 at 8 p.m., a festive concert of the church district will take place in the city church to mark "35 Years of Peaceful Revolution". The "Stern-Combo Meißen" - one of the oldest existing rock bands in Germany - will be performing. Tickets are available from the Tourist Information Office.
