Jena and Erlangen: United in the spirit of German unity

03.10.2024

Jena combined the Day of German Unity with the traditional Partnership Day in a celebration of friendship and remembrance. Around 200 guests from the Franconian twin town of Erlangen accepted the invitation to Jena.

The Volkshaus Jena became the stage for a moving ceremony. Jena's Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche and Erlangen's Mayor Jörg Volleth welcomed the guests with warm words. The sounds of the Erlangen flute ensemble provided the highlights, while the Jena street dance formation "Cucumbers" amazed the audience with their energetic moves.

The highlight of the program was the speech by Linda Teuteberg, Member of the German Bundestag. With powerful words, she reminded the audience that although the painful division was only one chapter in German history, overcoming it was a long process. "40 years of division probably also need 40 years of healing," said Teuteberg. She called for this phase to be overcome once and for all and for the challenges of the future to be tackled together.

The rest of the day offered many highlights:

  • Young volleyball players from both cities competed in friendly tournaments.
  • History buffs immersed themselves in the events of 35 years ago on a tour of the city.
  • Culture lovers enjoyed a concert on the theme of "Encounters" and the premiere of the latest part of the partnership film.
  • Knowledge was put to the test in an entertaining way at the pub quiz.
  • An ecumenical prayer offered space for reflection.
  • The crowning finale was a joint sing-along under the motto "Germany sings and sounds" - a harmonious finale that united voices and hearts.

This event is more than just an annual celebration. It is a living testimony to the deep bond between Jena and Erlangen. It honors the past, celebrates the present and looks confidently to a shared future. In times when unity and cohesion are more important than ever, this partnership sets a shining example for the whole of Germany.
