Jena and Zöllnitz cooperate in the residential, commercial and mobility sectors

07.07.2020

Jena's Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche and Zöllnitz Mayor Ingrid Helmke have signed a cooperation agreement to form a simple municipal joint venture (KAG). Both the municipal council of the municipality of Zöllnitz and the city council of Jena had previously approved the agreement, which provides for coordination on numerous development projects in the joint development area in Jena's southern region.

"The agreement is the result of an intensive coordination process between the municipality of Zöllnitz, the Südliches Saaletal administrative community and the city of Jena," said Mayor and Head of Urban Development Christian Gerlitz. "All sides communicated with each other as equals and drew up a contract that benefits both Jena and Zöllnitz. I am very much looking forward to even closer cooperation in the future."

Christian Gerlitz praised the good cooperation between the city and the municipality in recent months. "As a growing city, we are increasingly faced with the challenge of making land available for building developments in line with demand. The city and surrounding area must therefore think together more than ever. Only by acting together can we make effective use of our region's potential and compete with other regions."

Both sides want to coordinate the development of commercial building sites, current and future residential construction projects and integrated mobility services. Specific ideas for the construction of a Park+Ride facility were formulated and larger infrastructure projects were considered.

Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche emphasized the importance of the municipal working group: "The cooperation with Zöllnitz is a further building block for the good collaboration between the city and district that has already begun. "

Regular consultations are planned for the future. Decisions can only be made uniformly by the representatives of both contractual partners. The aim of the KAG is a coordinated, sustainable and resource-conserving land, infrastructure and location policy in the interests of overall regional development.
