Jena celebrates German-American friendship on October 6

This year, October 6 was once again to be all about German-American friendship. A varied program with the new US Consul General for Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia, John R. Crosby, was planned. However, due to the feared budget freeze for the US government, a large part of the program planned for 6 October had to be cancelled at short notice at the end of last week.

"We very much regret this development," said Lord Mayor Thomas Nitzsche. However, he was pleased to be able to welcome the new Consul General to Jena despite the current events. In order to express the solidarity of the city and its citizens with the United States of America, two items on the program will be retained, said Nitzsche. As planned, all citizens are invited to enjoy a free bratwurst. This will be handed out between 12.30 and 13.30 on the Holzmarkt. There will also be an English-language poetry workshop for young people in the Ernst Abbe Library.

"We very much regret that the German-American Friendship Day cannot take place in the planned form and are already looking forward to the next GAFD," said a spokeswoman for the US Consulate General. The background to this is German-American Day, which is celebrated every year on October 6 in the USA to commemorate the German cultural heritage in the country. The date is associated with the founding of Germantown. The founders of this settlement, led by the German preacher Franz Daniel Pastorius, landed in Philadelphia on October 6, 1683. The first German-American Friendship Day in Jena took place in 2021.
