Jena climate-neutral by 2035

18.03.2022

The city of Jena wants to be climate-neutral by 2035. A climate action plan (KAP) was therefore drawn up in January 2022. Now the residents of Jena are to be given the opportunity to participate.

Everyone's ideas should be included so that the climate action plan can be improved through different perspectives. A participation platform has been set up for this purpose. Interested people can contribute their ideas, as well as suggest and evaluate measures.

Climate protection coordinator for the city of Jena, Kevin Muschalle-Momberg says:

"Of course, this is also about acceptance towards future climate protection measures. The city administration alone will not be able to make Jena climate-neutral. We are dependent on the broad support of civil society."

Ideas and feedback can be entered directly on the online ideas map until the end of June 2022: https://www.ideenkarte.de/jena/

The climate action plan is due to be completed in summer 2022.

"The goal of climate neutrality by 2035 has been set. The question now is how we as a city can achieve this goal and what concrete options we have for action. The climate action plan is intended to create clarity and show the way to a climate-neutral city," says Mayor Christian Gerlitz.

There is a working group for the development of the climate action plan, which is made up of representatives from the city administration, politics, civil society, business, energy supply and the climate protection advisory board. A planning office is supporting the process. There will also be around ten themed workshops with experts.

What happens next - presentation and discussion of the climate action plan

As soon as the climate action plan is available, it will be presented to the public and discussed. The ideas and suggestions submitted will be examined and incorporated where possible. In addition, the Lord Mayor will report annually on the status of the implementation of Jena's climate targets.

Background information

With the city council resolution "Jena climate-neutral by 2035" of 14.07.2021, the city of Jena has committed itself to becoming climate-neutral by 2035. In doing so, the city is facing up to its responsibility to comply with the international agreement on the 1.5 °C target of the Paris Climate Agreement. Shaping a more liveable and environmentally friendly city offers great opportunities from which Jena will benefit: less air pollution and traffic noise, better and cheaper public transport, regional trade and thus more jobs, local independent and clean energy supply.
