Jena climate-neutral by 2035

27.01.2022

The city of Jena has started to draw up a climate action plan. The implementation of the measures in the climate action plan should lead Jena to climate neutrality by 2035. The first working group meeting took place digitally on January 18, 2022 due to the pandemic.

With the resolution "Jena climate-neutral by 2035" of 14.07.2021, the city council of Jena committed itself to this ambitious climate protection goal. The Climate Action Plan is intended to show which municipal measures are required to achieve this, how much it will cost to implement these measures and how much manpower is needed to do so.

The city of Jena has commissioned target GmbH to draw up the climate action plan. The Advisory Board for Climate Protection and Sustainable Development will actively support the process of developing appropriate measures. Working group meetings will be held to jointly develop measures that will enable Jena to become climate-neutral by 2035.

"With the first working group meeting, the process of developing the climate action plan has now officially begun. I am sure that we will have very exciting discussions about what is needed to put Jena on a climate-neutral course in the coming years," said the Mayor of Jena, Christian Gerlitz.

Various participation formats planned until August 2022

At the first working group meeting, target GmbH reported on the exact course of the development process, among other things. Six working group meetings and around ten themed workshops will take place by the end of August 2022. The actual measures are to be developed and discussed in the themed workshops. It was also suggested that immediate measures should be formulated and implemented by 2025.

Kevin Muschalle-Momberg, Climate Protection Coordinator for the City of Jena, emphasizes the participatory process: "The Climate Action Plan is of course being developed in a broad participatory process. The citizens of Jena are cordially invited to propose climate protection measures that can lead Jena to climate neutrality in 2035. "

Ideas and proposals can be submitted and voted on via a public online ideas map. This participation format, which is due to start around March, is intended to enable the lowest possible level of participation.

Dr. Wolfgang Daffner, member of the working group, adds: "As the initiators of the climate decision, it is particularly important to us that the path to climate neutrality starts as quickly as possible. The idea of formulating immediate measures up to 2025 in the Climate Action Plan is therefore an important step and gives expression to the goal of avoiding climate-damaging decisions in future wherever possible."

As soon as the Climate Action Plan is available, it will be presented to the public in a freely accessible format. On the basis of this event, all measures required to make Jena climate-neutral by 2035 will then be identified. These measures will then be presented to the city council for approval.
