Jena Façade Prize 2020: first awards presented

Thanks to private sponsors, the city of Jena was able to award the Jena Façade Prize for the 28th time this year. A total of €9,800 was available as prize money, divided between the main prize and the recognitions. Public contractors and larger players in the housing market will only receive awards without prize money.

By the beginning of October, 13 applications had been received. These cover a wide range of projects. From smaller and larger private residential buildings to public institutions and mixed-use buildings, the range extends all the way to commercial buildings. The jury, which consisted of representatives of the sponsors, the city administration and a member of the architectural advisory board, met on 12.11.2020. Due to the difficult situation regarding the organization of a central award ceremony, the jury decided to present the prizes individually on a small scale at the respective prize-winning property this year. In addition to the main prize, the jury awarded commendations and recognitions. The jury decided not to award the special energy prize this year.

Appreciation: Wenigenjena Community School, Jenzigweg 29

The award ceremonies kicked off on Monday in the form of an award to the municipal real estate company Kommunale Immobilien Jena for the new building of the Wenigenjena Community School, Jenzigweg 29 (design: RKW Achitektur Leipzig). The certificate and award plaque were presented by Mr. Heyder (HEYX Engineering) on behalf of the sponsors and Ms. Rietz (Head of Urban Planning) on behalf of the city administration. The jury praised the clever structuring of the very large building mass through various design elements on the façades. In the opinion of the jury members, the external appearance of the building is appropriate to the planning task and shows in an exemplary manner how the "internal use" can be made visible on the outside.

Appreciation: Residential building at Brehmstrasse 9

Tina and Marco Bloos received recognition for the renovation and conversion of their residential building at Brehmstraße 9 (planning: Architektur- und Planungsbüro Hennig, Jena), together with prize money of €800. Mr. Seliger (Sparkasse-Saale-Holzland) and Ms. Rietz (Head of Urban Planning) presented the cheque, certificate and award plaque on behalf of the sponsors.

The jury recognized the exemplary redesign of a typical estate house with appropriate interventions and additions. The additions give the façade a harmonious structure, especially on the valley side. The renovation areas of the façade with the preservation of period details together with the overall color concept are convincing. The outdoor areas designed with natural materials round off the overall picture.

Appreciation: Two-family house at Wöllnitzer Straße 13

For the new construction of the two-family house at Wöllnitzer Straße 13 (planning: raum 33| Architekten J. Weber & D. Hädicke PartGmbB, Weimar) , the property at Wöllnitzer Straße 13 received an award or similar with recognition combined with prize money of € 1,500. The award plaque, certificate, prize money and flowers were presented to Ms. Margull (Ingenieurbüro Bau- und Ausrüstungen GmbH Jena) on behalf of the sponsors and Ms. Rietz (Head of Urban Planning) on behalf of the city council.

In the opinion of the jury, the new building is a positive example of the integration of modern design language into a historically grown environment. In terms of its height and cubature, it blends in very well with the street and eliminates the urbanistic break in the existing building. The wooden elements, together with the clear arrangement of the openings, give the façade a coherent structure.
