Jena launches donation campaign for generators in twin town Brovary

04.02.2026

An urgent appeal for help has reached Jena City Hall: Igor Sapozhko, Mayor of the Ukrainian twin town of Brovary, has written to Jena's Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche. Due to massive attacks on the energy infrastructure and the severe frost, Brovary is facing a humanitarian emergency. The city of Jena is asking for donations from the community and local businesses to help finance the urgently needed high-performance generators.

Critical situation due to power cuts and frost

"Our electricians are working 24 hours a day, but we only have a few hours of electricity left,"

says Mayor Sapozhko, describing the dramatic situation on the ground. The targeted attacks on the power supply have damaged the grid to such an extent that the heat and water supply for thousands of residents is at risk - and that in icy winter temperatures. Although the town of Brovary has set up "warming rooms" and supplies those in need via a mobile field kitchen, the existing emergency generators are overloaded by the continuous operation and are increasingly failing.

"Only recently, Dr. Olena Dolynska and her colleagues told us here in the town hall about their everyday life during the war. Now we have received this letter, which makes it clear that it's not just about medical care, but about bare survival in the ice and darkness,"

says Lord Mayor Nitzsche.

"If the pumps for the heating and water fail, Brovary faces a catastrophe. Jena has proven in the past how great our solidarity is. I ask you to help us bring warmth and light to Brovary."

What is needed?

Industrial equipment and high-performance technology are needed to prevent the critical infrastructure from collapsing. The appeal for donations is aimed at procuring:

  • High-power industrial generators: These are essential to keep the pumps of the waterworks and the district heating networks in operation
  • Medium-capacity generators: These are urgently needed to keep hospitals and social facilities running.

The city of Jena is in close contact with the city administration of Brovary in order to procure the equipment and transport it to Ukraine as quickly as possible.

Donation account

The city of Jena has set up an earmarked donation account. Every euro goes directly towards the procurement of the generators and the logistics.
