Jena shines at leading international optics trade fair
January 31st marks the start of this year's Photonics West, the world's leading international trade fair for optics and photonics in San Francisco. Once again this year, 21 Jena-based companies will be there to present themselves and their products and showcase innovations "made in Jena".
"It is always remarkable how much bundled photonics expertise makes the journey from Jena to California," explains Wilfried Röpke, Managing Director of Jena Business Development. The 21 exhibitors from Jena play an important role as a mouthpiece for Jena as a city of light. "These industry professionals act as important ambassadors for Jena as a high-tech location to their project partners, customers and service providers."
Many of the Jena companies have been successfully marketing their products at the international meeting place for the optics, photonics and biomedical optics industry in California for years or even decades.
The spectrum of Jena exhibitors in California ranges from small "hidden champions" such as Heracle GmbH or Active Fiber Systems GmbH, through classic medium-sized companies such as LASOS Lasertechnik GmbH or asphericon GmbH, to the large companies ZEISS, SCHOTT and JENOPTIK.
The trade fair also offers the best conditions for start-ups such as Quantum Optics Jena, as CEO Dr. Kevin Füchsel knows:
"We are delighted to be taking part in San Francisco for the second time this year. Photonics West is like a class reunion for optics and photonics. It is the ideal platform for us to meet business partners and exchange news. The diverse supporting program with the scientific conference or the industry presentations also allows a quick insight into new development topics."
Jena delegation in California
A small Jena delegation led by Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche, JenaWirtschaft CEO Wilfried Röpke and two city councillors will also be traveling to California in parallel with the trade fair. On Tuesday, a visit to the Photonics West trade fair is on the agenda in order to meet all of Jena's industry professionals during an on-site tour.
According to Lord Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche, the exchange with the twin city of Berkeley is also particularly important:
"We would like to exchange ideas with Mayor Jesse Arreguin and other colleagues from Berkeley, particularly on the topics of housing, education and startup culture." The topic of climate protection is also on the agenda. A visit to the new Carl Zeiss Meditec research campus in Dublin, California, is also planned.
Jena exhibitors at Photonics West
In the run-up to the trip, JenaWirtschaft had put together a "Jena Care Package" for all Jena exhibitors at Photonics West, which includes various marketing materials about Jena as a business location. Among other things, the small Thuringian cuddly toy and Lego-JenTower are to be used as "gifts" to promote the City of Light. The world's leading photonics trade fair with around 1,300 international exhibitors opens until February 2 and is visited by over 20,000 professionals every year.
