Jena Smart City project: Successful review of the Smart City strategy and measures
Jena's Smart City project can start implementation! The announcement by the funding body of the positive review result of the strategy and action plans adopted and submitted by Jena City Council in February 2023 marks an important milestone on the way to becoming a smart city. After a 2.5-year strategy phase with intensive citizen participation, a comprehensive strategy with a total of nine measures covering five different fields of action was submitted for review. The German government is currently funding 73 Smart Cities model projects, which have been selected in three phases since 2019, with a total of 820 million euros.
Start of the 2nd season of the funding program
The Jena project with the slogan "Jena digitalizes, learns and shares - Our city creates and uses knowledge" is part of the 2nd season of the "Smart Cities Model Projects" funding programme of the Federal Ministry of Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB) and will receive a total of 17.5 million euros for the strategy and implementation phase.
The city of Jena can now start implementing the first seven measures and their numerous sub-measures. Two further measures are currently still under review.
The department head responsible for digitalization, Benjamin Koppe:
"Our Smart City project is pursuing an ambitious plan that aims to modernize the digital infrastructure by 2027, enable sustainable developments in all fields of action and improve the general quality of life in our city. With the measures that have now been approved, we can look forward to a number of exciting new developments and at the same time be very proud of this result. Participation in this program is a unique opportunity for our city to transform itself into a modern and sustainable metropolis that serves its citizens in an innovative and efficient way."
