Jena youth fire department summer camp starts
This year's Jena Youth Fire Brigade summer camp has been running on the grounds of the Jena University Sports Club since this Wednesday. Around 40 children and young people between the ages of 10 and 16 are spending a varied week's vacation there with technical firefighting training, sporting activities and plenty of team spirit. Exciting program items are on the agenda until Friday.
To kick things off, Mayor and Head of Safety Benjamin Koppe and Head of Specialist Services Nick Ludwig visited the camp together to talk to the participants and supervisors and express their appreciation.
Mayor and Head of Safety Benjamin Koppe explains: "It is impressive to see how much commitment and enthusiasm is shown here. The youth fire department not only imparts technical knowledge, but also strengthens the sense of community and the personal development of young people. Such activities are much more than just vacation camps; they give young people the opportunity to take on responsibility, try things out and get to know their own skills better. At the same time, they foster a deep understanding of what it means to stand up for others. This is exactly the kind of experience we need if we want to inspire young people to volunteer and join the fire department in the long term."
Practical insights and sporting fun
City youth fire brigade warden Robin Altmann-Krause and his team have once again put together a wide-ranging program. In the morning, participants will gain practical insights into various areas of the fire department. In cooperation with several volunteer fire departments from the city area, breathing protection exercises, training on dangerous goods situations, boat maneuvers and firefighting techniques will be carried out. The afternoons are dedicated to sport: rugby, floorball, jugger and stand-up paddling are on the program in cooperation with the Jena University Sports Club.
Head of department Nick Ludwig adds: "Such formats not only serve to recruit young talent, but are also a strong sign of cohesion and commitment in our city. Once you have experienced the community in the fire department, you often stay connected for life.
The Jena fire department is delighted with the strong interest in the youth fire department and hopes that as many of the young participants as possible will find their way into the active fire department in the future.
