Kommunalservice Jena supports the KlimaKultur plant project
Kommunalservice Jena is a cooperation partner of the participatory project "Plant Climate Culture!", which is supervised by the "Biodiversity of Plants" working group at the Institute of Ecology and Evolution at Friedrich Schiller University Jena. Citizens of Jena are invited to participate. We are looking for volunteers who want to cultivate ten herbaceous plant species in a corner of their garden and observe them phenologically for two years. The aim is to investigate how urban climatic conditions influence the phenology of the ten species. For example, do they actually flower earlier in the warm city center than on the cooler outskirts? Do the gradients of the different cities differ?
The selection of plants was limited to native species in their wild form, which are also non-toxic, insect-friendly, easy to cultivate and also very attractive. In order to accurately capture the gradient between the city center and the outskirts, the so-called "climate beds" are to be distributed evenly across the city - which is precisely why the initiative is hoping for as much support as possible.
The initiative is sponsored by the Botanical Garden Berlin, the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research, the iDiv team and the universities and botanical gardens of Halle, Leipzig and Jena; Kommunalservice Jena is also a cooperation partner.
For more information on the project, an opening event will take place online via Zoom on February 24, 2022 at 5 p.m. (password: plant). In addition, there will be a face-to-face event on March 20, 2020 at 14:00 in the Jena Botanical Garden (meeting point: entrance Fürstengraben 26).
