Linden trees to be preserved

16.01.2020

Six lime trees are being replanted at the northern end of Leibnizstrasse in Jena-Zwätzen. This measure is directly linked to the development of the new residential area "Am Oelste". Leibnizstrasse forms the link between the existing buildings and the new development. All underground pipes (district heating, drinking water, waste water, gas and electricity) will be connected there for the new houses. For this purpose, ground levels must also be adjusted so that rainwater can be adequately drained away.

The removal of the six trees has already been taken into account in the planning of the residential area and replacement planting has been prescribed in the same area. In addition to this, the possibility of preserving the existing trees by replanting them was examined and planned between the urban development and environment departments and Kommunale Immobilien Jena (KIJ). This means that six trees will be preserved and six new ones planted. Replanting is possible as the vitality of the lime trees and their root zone is sufficient for such a change of location. The work will be carried out by a certified landscaping company that has already successfully carried out similar replanting projects in other municipalities.

At the suggestion of various parties, Mayor Christian Gerlitz has now initiated an intensive examination of the described procedure by all the relevant departments of the city administration and with the involvement of the nature conservation advisory board. The necessity of the construction measure for the development of the entire new residential area is considered to be comprehensible by all sides, so that the effort to enable additional compensation through the replanting is considered to be extremely positive.
