Local heat for Jena-North: Public information event on the ANIKA project

04.02.2026

Stadtwerke Energie Jena-Pößneck GmbH will present the ANIKA local heating project on Thursday, February 5, 2026 from 7.30 pm in the plenary hall of Jena's historic town hall. ANIKA stands for waste heat recovery using an integrated sewage treatment plant. The city administration of Jena and BürgerEnergie Jena eG cordially invite all interested parties to attend. Admission is free; registration is not necessary.

The speaker for the evening is Jonas Waldhäusl from Stadtwerke Energie. There will be plenty of time for discussion after his presentation.

The project uses wastewater from the central sewage treatment plant in Jena, which is at least 12 °C warm all year round, to generate heat with the help of a large heat pump - CO₂-neutral, price-stable and independent of fossil markets. The large heat pump will have an installed capacity of around 20 MW and will be supplemented by a 4 MW power-to-heat plant and a heat storage system. A feasibility study is already available. The first construction phase is planned for 2027 to 2030 and the first connections in the North Industrial Estate are to be put into operation. From 2030, commercial enterprises and facilities along Wiesenstrasse are to be reliably supplied with heat. According to municipal heating planning, an expansion in the residential area of Jena-Ost between Jenzigweg and Karl-Liebknecht-Straße is planned and is being examined.
