Mayor Meets with Children from Lugoj for Ice Cream
A refreshing tradition continued yesterday, Wednesday, August 5, 2026: Mayor Dr. Thomas Nitzsche met with 36 young people from the sister city of Lugoj amid beautiful summer weather and treated them to ice cream on behalf of the city of Jena. The 12- to 14-year-olds are in Jena from August 2 to 14, 2026, accompanied by four teachers.
During their stay in Jena, the children can look forward to a varied program that includes a city tour, a visit to the Jentower, Heidecksburg Castle in Rudolstadt, and the Dornburg Castles. The itinerary also includes a visit to Imaginata, the planetarium, a guided tour of the Thuringian State Parliament in Erfurt, a rubber-boat tour, bowling, a visit to the municipal utilities, the “Westside” youth center, the Buchenwald Memorial, and a stadium tour.
The visit is one of the core components of the city partnership, which has been in place for over 40 years. The Jena Association for the Promotion of the Partnership between the Cities of Lugoj and Jena e.V. has been organizing a summer vacation program in Jena for students from the partner city for many years. Eating ice cream with the current mayor has become a cherished tradition during this time.
